African scientists are about to get unprecedented access to enormous amounts of satellite data. This is thanks to a deal signed by the African Union with the European Commission’s Copernicus programme, which describes itself as the world’s third largest data provider. Data, and access to good reliable data, is becoming an increasingly important tool for science.

A decline in migrants from Eritrea is expected after the country and Ethiopia have made peace, Germany's development minister said on Friday after visiting the long-reclusive country. Gerd Mueller spoke to reporters in Ethiopia after meeting Eritrea's longtime President Isaias Afwerki.

The African Union wants to have a continent-to-continent dialogue with Europe, a change that could make the framework of the Cotonou Agreement implode and leave the Pacific and Caribbean states out in the cold. The 79 countries of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Group are due to begin formal negotiations with the European Union on 1 September to redraw the outlines of the Cotonou Agreement.
