As part of the 2015 European Development Days, the CTA will organise a side event on the subject of “Vanuatu and Pacific : From the “Pam” disaster to rehabilitation & sustainable development”. This event, which will take place on Thursday 4 June, 12:30 PM – 13:45 PM (Tour & Taxis. Avenue du Port – Haveniaan 86c, B-1000 Brussels, Room D2), responds to the devastating Pacific cyclone “Pam”, which a month ago, destroyed infrastructure, agriculture and the livelihoods of many in Vanuatu.
The event presents an opportunity for Vanuatu and other Pacific Islands to bring their most immediate needs to the attention of the international community’s leading development cooperation and donor organisations. Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are characterised by their unique vulnerabilities to environmental disasters and climate change, which, given their geographical isolation and limited size, often restricts the scale of the benefits they attain from external assistance. A discussion will take place on new, more proactive partnerships, backed by COLEACP and others to complement the demand-driven approach, in order to respond to the challenges raised by these SIDS.
