France: Regional support for the African energy sector

A few months after becoming the first region to sign a partnership agreement with Energies for Africa, the association set up by Jean-Louis Borloo, the Hauts-de-France region is continuing its commitment to the African continent by hosting the Regional Forum for Energy Stakeholders. Fully aware of the urgency of the African situation, with 650 million inhabitants still without access to electricity and the benefits it brings in terms of healthcare, education and employment, the Hauts-de-France region is heavily involved in supporting the development of the energy sector on the African continent. For the region, there are two objectives: to cement its position as a European leader in launching projects in Africa and to promote the industrial know-how of its local businesses in the energy sector. The first step was the signing of the ‘peace-energy-growth’ plan launched by the former minister Jean-Louis Borloo through his association, Energies for Africa, in June 2017. This unique partnership has turned the region into a pioneer and European leader for the implementation of this plan to boost energy access for African citizens by 2025. On 12th October, Lille hosted the first Regional Forum for Energy Stakeholders for Africa. This was an opportunity, through networking and discussions, to bring together different players from across the sector (companies, researchers, training organisations, public bodies, etc.) to focus on the specific challenges faced by the African continent.
