As we were informing our readers in January, 2 years after the earthquake, Haiti’s recovery is still ongoing. H.E Raymond Magloire, the Haitian ambassador to Belgium, also accredited to Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the EU, explained to us the current state of affairs of the country. Notably, he underlines that one of the main challenges of Haiti is the reconstruction of its production capacity.
According to the International Trade (INTA) Committee, high and upper-middle income countries should be removed the EU's generalised trade preferences (GSP) list, as more could be done to help developing countries most in need. Likewise, MEPs strengthened safeguards to prevent textile imports from disrupting the EU market.
Following the European Council meeting, recently held in Brussels, strong support for an ambitious outcome of the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development was voiced.The European Council has set out some key principles that will guide the EU in its preparations. According to the European Council cover note, the Conference “should advance the global transition towards a green economy, thus promoting environmental protection, contributing to poverty eradication and stimulating low carbon and resource-efficient growth”.
As ministers at the 3140th Council meeting on Agriculture and Fisheries, adopted a decision authorising the Commission to open negotiations with the Republic of Mauritius, the EU and that country have recently initialled a new Fishery Partnership Agreement (FPA) and Protocol.
