The 9th edition of European Development Days 2015 (EDD2015) took place from 3-4th June at Tour & Taxi, Brussels. The Lab session on revolutionising data discussed the rapidly changing world within which African agriculture operates; the relevance and accuracy of our data and knowledge base; rising investments and policy interest in Africa’s agriculture demands and the necessity to have an up -to -date picture of the reality on the ground. The Lab showcased the ‘The Agriculture in Africa – Telling Facts from Myths’ project, which contributes to this by analysing national household surveys from 6 African countries conducted under the Living Standards Measurement Study – as part of the Integrated Surveys on Agriculture Initiative, launched in 2009.
The 9th edition of European Development Days 2015 (EDD2015) took place from 3-4th June at Tour & Taxi, Brussels. CTA, in partnership with GIZ, UNIDO, COLEACP and SNV hosted a lab session dedicated to Small Farmers Big Business (SFBB) on the theme of “value chains, value gains”. Dr. Agnès Kalibata, the new President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, (AGRA) gave the keynote speech and underlined the importance of bringing private sector on board, as well as the importance of private sector presence at forthcoming EDDs. The SFBB Partnerships’ vision was explained: sustainable developmentmust go hand in hand with the engagement of the private sector, with the aim to achieve food security in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. The session - ‘value chains for value gains’ - underlined the importance of an inclusive open-minded debate on how to overcome the complex challenges of domestic, regional and international markets.
The 9th edition of European Development Days 2015 (EDD2015) took place from 3-4th June at Tour & Taxi, Brussels. The panel addressed the impact of cyclone Pam which hit the Pacific in March 2015, with winds gusting to around 300 km per hour and seas surging onto the islands, specifically in Vanuatu, destroying crops, uprooting trees and flattening infrastructure. It took into consideration the number of shared issues between the African Caribbean and Pacific Group of States' small island developing states (SIDS) including their geographical isolation, their limited size (and thus minor agricultural sectors and reduced domestic markets), and their vulnerability to climate hazards and climate change.
