The European Commission has announced a €106 million support package - €46 million in humanitarian assistance and €60 million for development - to directly assist people in Sudan affected by forced displacement, undernutrition, disease outbreaks and recurrent extreme climatic conditions. Some 4.8 million people in Sudan currently need urgent assistance.

The Ambassador of Italy to Sudan, Fabrizo Fabrizio Lobasso, pointed out that Italy is giving a special concern to the Horn of Africa region, particularly Sudan due to its role in the region. Interviewed by Sudan News Agency (SUNA), he said that Sudan is living up to its commitments and working seriously to enhance its cooperation with the international community. The Italian Ambassador said that Sudan is showing credibility to be a distinguished partner in the international community for protecting stability at the area.

In order to promote socio-economic activities in Niger Delta and promote peace through increased access to safe and sustainable water supply, the European Union has released 20 million euros to the region. ‎This was revealed recently in Uyo, the Akwa-Ibom State capital during a media dialogue on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) by UNICEF WASH specialist, Engr. Moustapha Niang. He said the project which is called the Niger Delta Support Project (NDSP) is a five-year project aimed at mitigating the conflict in the Niger-delta region by addressing causes of non-availability of potable water and bring lasting solutions.

The Embassy of Dominica in Brussels (member of the Embassies of the Eastern Caribbean States) is working closely with the EU Directorate General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), to trigger the EU’s emergency response system to assist Dominica by providing both monetary and material aid for hurricane relief. The European Commission’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO) is providing EC$806,000 (250,000 Euros) in emergency humanitarian aid to Dominica, following the severe destruction caused by Hurricane Maria which devastated the island on Sep. 19.

The Gambia Government through the office of the Vice President and the Ministry of Women's Affairs, in close partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, has launched a 4.4 million Euro project entitled, "Improving Food Security and Nutrition in the Gambia, Through Food Fortification. The event was held on Tuesday 26th September 2017, at a local hotel in Senegambia. The multi million Euro project is funded by the European Union and aims to improve nutrition and health outcomes of vulnerable women and children in the Gambia, especially women, girls and children in the North Bank and Central River regions of the country.

European Commission-funded, FAO-led partnership will help African, Caribbean and Pacific countries shift from wildmeat to alternative sources of animal protein. A €45 million multi-partner programme launched on Tuesday 10 October at FAO seeks to help African, Caribbean and Pacific countries halt unsustainable wildlife hunting, conserve their natural heritage and strengthen people's livelihoods and food security. Funded by the European Commission, the seven-year programme is an initiative of the African Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP).

Europe will remain an important supplier of agricultural goods in the future but the greatest untapped potential lies in Africa, which could become the “bread basket” for the rest of the world, the president of Yara, a multinational fertiliser and crop nutrition company, told EURACTIV. Svein Tore Holsether also said digital technologies like precision farming were the best way to boost agricultural production. “While we still see the potential for increasing productivity and sustainability of European agriculture, the greatest potential we see is in Africa,” Holsether pointed out. “Today €29.6bn ($35bn) is spent every year on importing food, while there is a great untapped potential for higher productivity as the continent holds 65% of the world’s arable land,” the fertiliser company boss said.

Zimbabwe will not be exporting beef anytime soon because of regular outbreaks of foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease and government does not have resources to eliminate the disease, according to deputy Agriculture Minister Paddy Zhanda. The southern African nation has experienced regular outbreaks of FMD — a highly contagious disease of cloven-hoofed animals — in recent times in cattle-rich regions of Matabeleland and Midlands, which killed hundreds of cattle in those regions over the past four years, The Insider reports. “Zimbabwe will not export for the meantime because of foot-and-mouth and we don’t have resources to deal with.

The Deputy Chairman of the National Council of Ministers, the Minister of Investment, Dr. Moubark Al -Fadil al Mahdi, met Thursday, at his office Mr. Jean-Michel Dumond the ambassador of the European Union to Sudan and discussed with him a number of issues and projects the EU intends to implement in the coming phase, including projects of education support and food security. The meeting also tackled the joint cooperation, the means for coordination with concerned authorities to guarantee the success of these projects.The EU ambassador noted that the program targets six states, including the projects of return of the displaced people toe their villages in Darfur, the projects of the food security, and social development in Kassala state by using the state's agriculture resources.

Zimbabwe is expected to receive $2 million worth of equipment from India for a food testing laboratory, which is being established in the Department of the Research and Specialist Services under the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development. This came out at a meeting between Agriculture Minister Dr Joseph Made and Indian Ambassador Rungsung Masakui held at the ministry's Ngungunyana offices yesterday. Dr Made said the meeting was meant to review several agricultural projects, chief among them the progress of the food testing laboratory. The laboratory, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, will test domestic and export materials.
