Chancellor Merkel has arrived in Senegal ahead of visits to Ghana and Nigeria. With nearly a dozen CEOs in tow, the German chancellor hopes that economic development will curb migration from the region. German Chancellor Angela Merkel landed in Senegal late on Wednesday as she starts off a three-country west African tour.

More and more Kenyans are planting avocados in their fields, even at the cost of abandoning their traditional coffee or tea crops, as European demand for this product is strong. "When the avocado market skyrocketed, we thought it was more interesting to plant these trees.

Signalling that Germany means business, Merkel was accompanied by around a dozen German business leaders.

The European Union (EU) has lifted the five-year ban imposed on Kenyan pea farmers on August 24, 2018. According to managing director Esther Kimani from the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (Kephis), the EU Commission recognised the determination farmers had in adhering to the EU standards.

The African Union has appointed Carlos Lopes, a member of President Paul Kagame's dream team in reforming the continental body and former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, as the high representative for the post-2020 negotiations with the European Union.

Africa’s share of the European avocado market fell from 27% to 18% between 2014 and 2017, according to FreshFruitPortal, citing data from Eurostat. While African avocado exports to the EU actually rose by about 5% over this period, from 82,000 to 86,000 tonnes, this increase is marginal compared to the 59% leap in avocado imports to the EU between 2014 and 2017 (from 305,000 to 486,000 tonnes).

Armed with the objectives of advancing the ties and fine-tuning trade opportunities existing between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, Charles Bowman, Lord Mayor of London embarked on a three-day visit which ended at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Thursday. During his visit to the NSE, Bowman said the meetings he’s had over the last three days with business and government leaders have been to build financial partnerships between Nigerian and London.
