World-renowned for its industrial excellence and ability to innovate, Germany no longer wants to play merely a supporting role on the African continent. Although the political will of the world’s 4th largest economy is very real, the nervousness of German companies is currently a limiting factor. Less than one year after her first visit to the African continent – visiting Ethiopia, South African and Liberia – Chancellor Merkel has just completed a second mini-tour. Accompanied by a sizeable delegation of German business leaders, she spent 3 days visiting Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria before moving on to Algiers on 17th September. This should not come as a surprise, as the German government and business leaders have spent the past 18 months rebuilding their African strategy.
