French-African research into food security in the Sahel

The Sahel countries are confronted with numerous challenges which hold back their development potential. The countries in the region have to deal with climate change risks, increasing demographic pressure, an increasingly urban trend and the security crisis shaking the region. Agricultural yields are declining significantly, creating food security issues. In order to get through these issues and allow the region to develop, innovative solutions and research exist. In order to pursue research efforts, to intensify them, better coordinate them and create a real positive impact on local populations, national agricultural research institutions from the Sahel countries, such as the CORAF (West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development), CILLS (Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel) and CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development) on 19th September 2018 signed the Ouagadougou Declaration. This declaration is within the structure of the Sahel Alliance, launched in July 2017 by France and Germany. This Alliance aims to create a platform for international cooperation aimed at development in the Sahel region. It will enable a more efficient coordination of initiatives and aims to increase the support provided by development partners within the region.
