According to Coface, Germany in 2017 became the leading European supplier to Africa, ahead of France. According to the study reported by information website Entreprendre.fr, France has lost half its export market share in Africa since 2000, going from 11% to 5.5% in 2017, even if it retained a trade surplus over this period (except in 2008 and 2012, when oil prices reached historic highs). The decline in France’s export performance in Africa is part of a more global slowdown in French exports as a share of world trade, falling from a 4.7% market share in 2001 to 3% in 2017.
