The Commission has announced today €68 million in humanitarian assistance for vulnerable communities in Sudan and South Sudan. The funding comes as millions of people across both countries are in need of assistance, with the conflict in South Sudan triggering an influx of refugees into neighbouring Sudan.

MEPs and African, Caribbean and Pacific MPs are shaping their future their partnership at a three-day ACP-EU joint parliamentary assembly in Brussels. Members of the European Parliament and their counterparts from 78 African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries are meeting in Brussels from 18-20 June for their last joint session before talks on renewing the ACP-EU partnership start in August 2018.

Today, the Operational Committee of the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa has adopted a new set of 8 programmes and 4 riders worth €294 million for the Horn of Africa region. This new package complements 50 previously adopted actions amounting to €820.3 million for the Horn of Africa. Approved in seven packages in December 2015, April 2016, October 2016, December 2016, April 2017, December 2017 and February 2018, these actions all contribute to improving stability and addressing the root causes of irregular migration and forced displacement in the Horn of Africa region.

Enrolment in primary education in developing countries has reached 91 per cent but 57 million children remain out of school. More than half of children that have not enrolled in school live in 48 countries from Sub-Saharan Africa, which are members of the 79 African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP). An estimated 50 per cent of out-of-school children of primary school age live in conflict-affected areas. Sub Saharan Africa is home to 17 of the 33 countries and territories the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank Group classifies as 'fragile or conflict affected'.

The East African Court of Justice (EACJ) has dismissed a petition seeking the reinstatement of an appeal of the case on the Economic Partnership Agreement between the regional bloc and European Union. A Tanzanian, Mr Castro Pius Shirima, filed the re-appeal on March 5 this year and hearing was scheduled for May 9. However, Mr Shirima or his lawyer failed to appear before the court, forcing the judges to throw out the petition for abuse of court processes.

The European Union and its Member States continue to be the world's leading provider of Official Development Assistance (ODA) with an overall amount of €75.7 billion in 2017, confirm the newly released figures by the OECD-DAC. This amount represents 0.50% of EU Gross National Income (GNI). This is significantly above the 0.21% average of the non-EU members of the Development Assistance Committee (DAC), despite a small decrease compared to the previous year. Global ODA, reported to the OECD-DAC by all donors, decreased from €131 billion in 2016 to €130 billion in 2017.

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was on Saturday joined by Italian Ambassador to Kenya - Amb. Mauro Massoni at the official launch of ‘Reducing the Adverse Drivers of Migration Through Local Value Chain Development in Kiambu. Also present at the launch were Dr. Gabriel Rugalema-Food and Agriculture Organisation (F.A.O) Representative in Kenya, Agriculture C.E.C- Mary Kamau, and Education, Youth & Sports CEC- Dr. Joseph Ng’ang’a, Fomer Kiambu MP Anna Nyokabi and County Chief of Staff Gibson Mburu. According to Waiititu, Italy will offer assistance to the Government of Kenya in the development of agriculture value chains in Kiambu County.

Trademark East Africa (TMEA) has launched the process of setting up a logistics centre in Gulu town to facilitate trade between Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. Speaking to journalists at their offices in Kampala this morning, TMEA country director Moses Sabiiti said the organization has already secured $8m (Shs 28.8bn) from United Kingdom’s Department for Foreign Aid (DFID) and European Union for the world-class facility.

The European Commission has announced a €106 million support package - €46 million in humanitarian assistance and €60 million for development - to directly assist people in Sudan affected by forced displacement, undernutrition, disease outbreaks and recurrent extreme climatic conditions. Some 4.8 million people in Sudan currently need urgent assistance.
