Improved knowledge of sexual and reproductive health, greater awareness of rights, ability to recognise and avoid risky situations, and willingness and confidence to inform and positively influence their peers and neighbours: these were just some of the results observed among pupils targeted by a BTC-supported project for HIV & AIDS awareness. The project, piloted in 28 primary schools in Tanzania, also contributed to additional benefits including better attendance, reduced number of early pregnancies, and improved academic performance.

According to the UN, the international target to halve the prevalence of hunger in the world is within reach, after figures were published in the State of the Food Insecurity in the World report that suggest that global progress on reducing hunger has been better than previously assumed. The percentage of hungry people in developing countries has fallen from more than 23 percent 1990 – 1992 to less than 15 percent 2010 – 2012, bringing the estimated number to 870 million hungry people between 2010 – 2012.

The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), which officially opened in August 2005, has, as its mission, the coordination of the Caribbean region’s response to climate change. During the course of the last Brussels Development Briefing, entitled “Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security: proven approaches and new investments”, we had the opportunity to speak to Carlos Fuller, who is one of the centre's experts. He sat down with us to explain the CCCCC's main ongoing projects and developments to date.

Brussels will see the European Development Days 2012 (EDD12) in October. Some of the focus areas of this two-day (October 16th and 17th) event will be sustainable agriculture, food security, resilience, inclusive growth and private sector engagement in international development.
