Roads in the tropics often go hand in hand with economic development. But the day before the International Day of Forests (21 March), an MEP and a number of scientists called for a response to the role they play in deforestation.

A delegation composed from the European Parliament Development Committee will visit Sudan from 25th-27th March 2014.The visiting delegation will meet Sudanese officials but also civil society organisations, representatives of local and international agencies and organizations working in Sudan to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing Sudan in the area of humanitarian affairs and development issues.

At the request of the Italian delegation, the Council took stock of the difficult situation that the EU rice sector is facing due to the progressive increase in EU imports of milled rice (7886/14). Some Member States supported the Italian views that increasing EU rice imports decrease the profitability of rice production in the EU.

The Commission presented to the ministers a report on the possibility to extend mandatory origin labelling for all meat used as an ingredient. The report was published in December last year(18148/13).

The Commission presented to the ministers a proposal for a regulation on organic production and labelling of organic products. In December last year, the Council was briefed on the main results of the public consultation on organic farming conducted by the Commission (17375/13).
