We recently met Nicolas Chevrollier, Deputy Programme Manager Innovation for development, TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) in Brussels. He participated in a panel discussion that aimed at identifying the policy and business requirements that foster ICT-based entrepreneurship and bottom-up developments in Africa. Speaking of the ICT investment opportunities in Africa, he thinks that donors can play a key role supporting ICT education.

The adaptive and integrated tools and strategies for natural resources management (AFROMAISON) will be financed under 7th FWP (Seventh Framework Programme) for an amount of 4.15 million euro. The main outputs of AFROMAISON are a toolbox, short-term to long-term strategies, quick wins (much gains with little effort) and operational strategies for adaptation to global change. It will focus on the three groups of tools: strategies for restoration and adaptation (including sustainable landscape intensification), economic tools and incentives for Integrated Natural Resource Management (INRM) and tools for spatial planning.

Following a European Parliament vote "Biocides" - ranging from rat poisons to disinfectants - will be subject to tougher safety checks. The aim is to better protect human health and the environment, while streamlining the marketing approval process.
