Ethiopian unit of Dutch brewer start sales

Ethiopian greenfield brewer Habesha, majority-owned by Dutch brewer Bavaria NV, shall  start selling beer later on this year. The company aims to tap into rising domestic demand that has attracted global brands. Bavaria NVwill compete with breweries owned by Heineken and Diageo. Many of the world's leading brewers have turned their focus to emerging markets such as Africa, flowing decline in consumer demand in Europe and stagnation in the US.  Ethiopia's average annual beer consumption is currently less than five litres per capita, which is about half the average for sub-Saharan Africa, excluding South Africa. Bavaria NV bought a stake in Habesha Breweries in 2012 and also owns the Bedele and Harar breweries;  Ethiopia's BGI the market leader  “was bought by French drinks company Castel in 1990.
