EU support for agri business in Tanzania

A number of donors from the EU have signed agreements with Tanzania granting more than $103 million (170 billion shillings) to finance agriculture and infrastructure projects. The European Union was providing $82.7 million (136 billion shillings) to fund agriculture, roads, energy, and ultimately trade and development. The financing is part of an agreement with the European Development Fund to support agriculture, roads, energy and trade and development.
Other donors include the United Kingdom Department for International Development, the Rural Energy Agency and the Belgium Technical Co-operation, whose donations totalling $20.5 million (32.6 billion shillings) will support the Southern Agricultural Corridor of Tanzania.
In addition, TradeMark East Africa, which receives funding from the governments of Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden and United Kingdom, pledged $2 million (3.2 billion shillings) to improve Tanzania's central transport corridor.
Tanzanian Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Finance Servacious Likwelile welcomed the EU support. According to Mr. Likwelile, the main aim is to offer opportunities for small holder farmers to engage in profitable agriculture by developing stronger linkages with commercial agribusinesses.
"The financing agreements we are signing today are very much about economic growth and wellbeing prospects, and are clear demonstration of the friendship and goodwill that exists between Tanzania and European Union," Sebregondi, EU ambassador to Tanzania, said.
