EU begins negotiations for Fishing Agreement with Cook Islands

This summer, representatives from the Cook Islands and the European Union (EU), met in Rarotonga, Cook Islands to discuss and begin negotiations on a Sustainable Fishing Partnership Agreement (SFPA).
This agreement will allow the EU to fish tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean, and in return will give the Cook Islands a financial contribution. Money from the EU will also be allocated to support domestic maritime and fishery policy. This bilateral partnership is of great importance to the region so that sustainable fisheries can grow. Additionally, through this agreement, policy will be supported that fights illegal, unreported, and unregulated, fisheries. The adoption of the agreement may also foster similar dialogues concerning fisheries and domestic governance in the region.
