EU Farm Policy Reform – the Current State of Play

More than a year after the Commission unveiled its proposals for new legislation, and following passionate debates, public hearings and expert workshops, Parliament's agriculture committee is preparing to vote on four core regulations that should pave the way for a fairer, greener, more efficient and more competitive EU farm policy.
The European Union's farm policy - known as the common agricultural policy (CAP) - is one of the oldest EU policies. It is aimed at ensuring adequate, stable and efficient production of high-quality food which is competitive on world markets, while promoting the economic development of rural areas and encouraging environmentally-friendly production methods. It organises the markets in agriculture products, defines how and on what conditions EU agricultural funding will be distributed to farmers in different member states and provides support for farmers in the event of natural disasters or outbreaks of animal diseases.
