EMFF to help attain CFP objectives

During the course of the last Council meeting on Agriculture and Fisheries, ministers had an orientation debate on a proposal for a new European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). This proposal is related both to the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2014-2020 currently under discussion and to the ongoing reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) covering the same period. Mr Aletraris, the Cyprus minister, who presiding over the meeting stressed that one of the main purposes of the meeting was “to achieve sustainable fishing”.
The new fund is aimed at helping attain the objectives of both the CFP and the EU's Integrated Maritime Policy (IMP) and is structured around the following pillars: Smart green fisheries, enabling a smooth transition to sustainable fishing; Smart green aquaculture, to give EU consumers access to healthy and nutritional food produced by a competitive and sustainable industry; Sustainable and inclusive development of communities depending on fisheries, Cross-sectoral maritime policies generating savings and growth.
