Mr. Ciolos disagrees that EU rules for sugar market are unfair

According to the latest statements by Dacian Ciolos, the EU Agriculture Commissioner, EU rules for the sugar market do not favour beet producers over refiners of raw cane sugar. Some members of the European Parliament from Finland, Portugal, Italy and Bulgaria wrote to Mr. Ciolos in May, stating that EU rules concerning the sugar market were making refining in the EU “unviable”. Now, the EU Agriculture Commissioner has expressed his disagreement with that approach.
“I do not agree that this approach produces a system skewed in favor of the sugar beet sector […] These measures are intended to meet the needs of different operators, including refiners, who will thereby have the opportunity to participate in tenders, according to their needs and competitiveness”, he concludes.
