Cyprus Presidency delves into EU Development Aid

The  Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis met the EP Committees on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and Development (DEVE), this week. She presented the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in several fields, including EU's Humanitarian Aid.
Speaking of the importance the importance of the EU’s development and humanitarian aid policy, Mrs. Marcoullis  said: “Cyprus is assuming the Presidency at a difficult juncture when development and humanitarian aid budgets of member-states are under great pressure from the global economic and financial crisis. We believe, however, the European Union must maintain and strengthen its global leadership in addressing the many humanitarian challenges that we are faced with.”
Recalling of two of the most severe recurring humanitarian emergencies, in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, he said that it was needed to effectively address the underlying causes of structural food insecurity, displacement and the strengthening of resilience of the countries in the region.
She commended the efforts of the outgoing Danish Presidency, as well as of the Commission, in advancing the EU’s development and humanitarian agendas through initiatives such as the European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps and the renewed Food Aid Convention, which have the full support of the Cyprus Presidency.
