EU aims to depeen cooperation with Dominican Republic

Following a recent meeting with with Leonel Fernández Reyna President of the Dominican Republic, Herman Van Rompuy has confirmed in a press statement that relations between the EU and the Dominican Republic are on track . He has recalled that the EU is the second trade partner of the Caribbean country, as well as its most important foreign investor. “The EU is also the first development partner of the Dominican Republic with a programme worth more than Euro 280 million”, he adds.
Speaking of the existing cooperation framework with the country, Mr. Van Rompuy has said: “We are interested in increasing dialogue and cooperation with the Dominican Republic in the areas of human rights, counternarcotics, business climate, the security of investments, competitiveness, trade, and relations with Haiti.”
The Dominican Republic’s relations with the EU are developed since the accession of the country to the Lomé IV Convention.
