African lacks an institutional environment to boost innovation

Following the second meeting of the Network for the Coordination and Advancement of Sub-Saharan Africa-EU Science and Technology Cooperation (CAAST-Net), held in Dakar, the recommendations made have pointed to the necessity of an institutional environment that can encourage innovation on the African continent.
Almamy Konté, director of technological research at the Ministry of Scientific Research in Senegal, stressed the minimal interaction between researchers, governmental authorities and the private sector in many African countries.
Equally, Gerasimos Apostolatos, the principal scientific officer at the European Commission, recalled that innovation is essential for Africa's development.  The main obstacles are related to the lack of funding and synergy between academia and industry, regarding technological innovation.
