"Much more needs to be done to make green growth a reality"

WTO members and representatives of other international organizations recently attended a workshop on Aid for Trade, sustainable development and the green economy, that was held at the WTO. The Chair of the Committee on Trade and Development, Ambassador Anthony Mothae Maruping, Lesotho, highlighted that Aid for Trade (AfT) contributes to sustainable development, though much more needs to be done to make green growth a reality.
Mr. Maruping underlined that  “trade is an intrinsic part of the economic development pillar of sustainable development and that the WTO has a central role to play in ensuring environmental measures and green growth policies are not disguised forms of protectionism”. Furthermore,   he noted that sustainable development objectives influence the design and delivery of AfT implementation. “Least-developed countries are well-placed to adapt to the green economy but, like other developing countries, cost and access to technology are inhibiting factors”, he added.
