7th Meeting of the ACP/EU

Following the 7th Meeting of the ACP/EU, which took place in Lusaka, Zambia, and started on Wednesday 22nd, 2012, ACP and EU parliamentarians said that the corruption and gender-equality gap hinder African development.
Parliamentarians underlined that the fight against corruption requires “strong policies, adequate legislation on anti-corruption, independent media”. They also highlighted that “democracy goes beyond free organisations, transparent and credible elections.”
Accordingly, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member States were called to create legal and institutional mechanisms to promote gender equality in decision-making and political positions.
Some trade issues were also discussed. Notably, parliamentarians stressed the opportunities for mineral-driven transformation in Africa if revenues generated by trade in that sector stayed in the region and not were drained outside.
