More EU funding to increase AMISON troop strength

As we were informing our readers last week, following the visit of the Prime Minister of Somalia the international conference on the future of the country would discuss the proposed increase in active troop strength in the African Union-led Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). Both Catherine Ashton and Andris Piebalgs, High Representative and EU Commissioner for Development respectively, who attended the conference, held on February 23, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to stabilizing Somalia and announced the EU will support AMISOM's crucial work with a further €100 million. “The new funding will support the proposed increase in troop strength agreed by UN Security Council Resolution 2036(2012) adopted on Wednesday 22 February”, Ashton stated.
The High Representative said the EU is to support the people of Somalia "in their efforts to build a stablepolitical future, to develop their economy and to be able to live in security under the rule of law”. Moreover, she reminded of EU´s comprehensive approach in its Strategic Framework for the Horn of Africa. As CTA already informed, Alex Rondos, who was recently appointed by the council  as EU Special Representative to the region comprising Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda, is playing an active role of coordination, primilarily on Somalia.
Catherine Asthon concluded: “In the last 5 years, the EU contributed over €1 billion to Somalia. We are willing to continue to support the Somali people on their path to a better future”.
