The WTO recently conducted a three-week Introduction Course for Least-developed Countries (LDCs). Ambassador Van Schreven of the Netherlands opened the course, which was attended by 23 participants from LDCs. Notably, ten of the participants were from countries in the process of accession to the WTO.
The course, which was held from 30 January to 17 February 2012 in Geneva, dealth with the functions and structure of the WTO, as well as its basic rules and disciplines. Participants were also briefed on the overall WTO work programme, including on the state of play of a number of areas in the Doha Development Agenda (DDA) negotiations. The development dimension constituted an important element of the programme, which focused on the negotiating priorities of LDCs.
