Ministers adopt conclusions on agri-environment support

The Council recently adopted conclusions on a special report from the European Court of Auditors, entitled "Is agri-environment support well designed and managed?". The Court acknowledges that significant progress has been made since the introduction of agri-environment payments. Though the Council takes note of the recommendations, it points out  that the actual environmental benefits of these measures can be seen only after a certain period of time following their implementation.
The Council also emphases that measures may aim at improving farming practices but also at maintaining environment-friendly practices. It is important to remember that, in October 2011, the Commission adopted a proposal for a regulation on rural development in the framework of the CAP reform. This proposal is currently being examined in Council along with the Council's preparatory bodies.
These conclusions were adopted in the course of the 3140th Council meeting on Agriculture and Fisheries.
