Allow armed mercenaries on board of EU ships, demand two MEPs

The EU has to reinforce its fight against piracy – that is the message that two Members of the Transport Committee in the European Parliament wanted to convey after a public hearing on piracy that was held on 12 October. For George Koumoutsakos from Greece and Peter van Dalen from the Netherlands, “the EU has to fight piracy with all the necessary means”. Between 450 and 600 sailors are still held hostage in Somalia according to Koumoutsakos. And the EU “has to try and free these people as soon as possible”.

“Apart from the human aspect, there is also the economic aspect”, Van Dalen added, “pirates threaten this important lifeline for international trade. The two MEPs want to organise a debate in the Parliament plenary to upscale the results of the hearing and to increase pressure upon the EU member states.
