Increasing and diversifying agricultural production in Malawi

In Malawi, agriculture accounts for 36% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 90% of foreign export earnings and employs 87% of the population. However, to reach the goal of the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy of transforming Malawi from a predominately importing and consuming to a producing and exporting country, some important challenges need to be addressed. The European Commission therefore implemented the Farm Income Diversification Programme.

Its objectives are among others to provide training and capacities to 46 000 smallholder farmers, to reduce post harvest losses and to diversify and increase agricultural production. In the first phase of the programme from 2005 to 2010, it has helped to raise average household income from 126 EUR to 190 EUR and to save about 1 530 000 kg of grain from post harvest loss. The second phase of the programme, to which the European Commission contributes 16.2 million EUR (88% of the total volume), has started in 2010.
