EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner promoted disaster resilience in the US

EU Humanitarian Aid Commission Kristalina Georgieva was in the United States along with Commission President José Manuel Barroso and other European Commissioners to attend the UN General Assembly. From 21 to 25 September, Georgieva attended a number of high-level meetings with development stakeholders in Washington and New York in which she promoted dialogue on the urgent need to build disaster resilience.

The Commissioner participated in high-level panel discussions at the Annual Meetings Program of Seminars event hosted by the European Union, the Government of Japan and the World Bank, in partnership with the UK’s Department for International Development and USAID.

Ms. Georgieva also met the EU Country Directors of the World Bank where she discussed new funding strategies. Her visit laid the groundwork for next year’s World Bank/IMF meeting in Tokyo and the G20 Mexico Presidency, where disaster risk reduction and building resilience will be the core themes. On Saturday, Ms. Georgieva addressed the UN ministerial mini-summit on humanitarian response to the Horn of Africa crisis in New York.
