Nigeria: EU, UNICEF to partner on water, sanitation programmes

The European Union, EU, and the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, are to partner Anambra State for the provision of one hundred percent access to sanitation, hygiene and improved water supply to selected communities in Ogbaru local government area of the state. Ogbaru is one of the six local governments in the state designated for fighting abject poverty and improving infrastructure.

A statement by Mr. Charles Nzuki of the UNICEF's Field Office, Enugu, said the selection of Ogbaru was a reward for the state's good performance in the execution of the water and sanitation programmes.

In the letter, Nzuki recalled that Anambra State signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the EU for the implementation of the Nigeria Water Supply, Sanitation Sector Reform Programme in five local government areas of the state, including Ogbaru, while UNICEF provided support for the implementation of the rural water supply

Five other states in Nigeria benefited from the programme which ended on July 31, 2011 and it was Anambra's excellent performance in the implementation that attracted the latest reward.
