Dirk Niebel visits refugee camp Dadaab

On Tuesday, the German federal minister for economic cooperation and development, Dirk Niebel, visited the refugee camp Dadaab as part of his travel through Kenya.

Besides providing emergency food aid, the German development ministry (BMZ) will also increase efforts to stabilise the situation for refugees and locals in the medium and long term. Increased educational opportunities for children are particularly in the focus.

More than 400,000 people now reside in the refugee camp Dadaab in very difficult conditions. Facilities for refugees are outdated and overcrowded. The BMZ has been supporting the refugee camp for several years as part of a joint programme with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), this year with an amount of 2 million EUR.
