The EU massively invests in health in Burundi

The European Commission has attributed 25 million EUR to the health policy sector in Burundi. It approved the Support Project for the Health Sector in Burundi “Amagara Meza” which will be implemented from 2011 to 2015.

The project “Amagara Meza” (which means “good health” in the national language) follows the HealthPlus project that was implemented in six provinces from 2008 to 2011. HealthPlus supported the decentralisation of health policies towards the regional level and also started a pilot project for performance-based remuneration which increased the quantity and quality of health services.

Amagara Meza will cover eight provinces and several activities:

  • Access to health care services
  • A better health care quality and capacity-building for public health officials
  • Consolidation of the achievements of the HealthPlus project with regard to decentralisation and performance-based remuneration
  • New initiatives with regard to the financing of health, health insurance, a national policy for the management of medical material and an improvement of financial management in Burundi’s health ministry.
