Council adopts energy strategy priorities

On Monday 28 February, the Council adopted the conclusions for its energy strategy 2011-2020. It reaffirmed the European Council’s conclusions from 4 February (priority for energy efficiency, supply security and an opening towards fossil energy) and defined short, medium and long-term priorities. The Council aims at a “global energy strategy to provide citizens, industry and the economy with reliable, sustainable and affordable energy that also contributes to European competitiveness”. In the short and medium-term the Council calls for a quick implementation of the third legislative package on the internal energy market and on infrastructure improvement (as it is defined in the communication “Energy Infrastructure priorities for 2020 and beyond”). The Council also highlighted the pivotal role it sees for energy efficiency and urged that a new plan for energy efficiency quickly be elaborated. It also suggested examining possible funding possibilities in order to put the plan into practice.
