EAC EPA experts set to chart negotiating strategy with EU

East African Community (EAC) experts negotiating the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Union are to meet this month, after receiving funds for the work. Ismail Mfinanga, Assistant Director of Regional Integration Programmes in the Ministry of Industries and Trade, said the EAC secretariat reported that it had secured Swedish Kroner 24 million from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) to facilitate EPA negotiations by EAC experts during the EAC Sectoral Council meeting held on 29th November, last year. Financial constraints stalled the EPA negotiations between the East African Community (EAC) and European Union (EU), experts which were scheduled for completion in November last year. Initially, EPA comprehensive negotiations by EAC and EU experts were scheduled to start in October, last year and concluded in November, with the signing of EPA agreement. However Mfinanga, who is one of the experts involved in the EPA negotiations, said: “The two parties missed the deadline because of financial constraints on the part of EAC.”
