On the 22 of December 2010, the European Commission has approved three financing decisions in favour of Belize (EUR 18 791 000), Swaziland (EUR 12 057 000) and Congo (EUR 1 059 000) to support their sugar sector in the framework of the Accompanying Measures to the changes in the EU trade regime with Sugar Protocol Countries. The reform of the EU sugar regime has required sugar dependent countries, such as Belize, Swaziland and Congo to embark on major adjustments and transformation in order to enhance the competitiveness of the industry and development complementary economic diversification initiatives. The EU provides support to these adjustments with projects funded from the EU budget, with a particular attention to the rural population dependent on the sugar sector.
