EU states want impact study on 30% CO2 cut

Even before EU Member States have decided how to divide up efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the 27-country bloc has requested the European Commission to prepare an impact assessment on the effect of a 30% reduction by 2020. A number of Member States are reluctant to commit to a 30% reduction in greenhouse gases. Environment ministers meeting in Brussels on 15 March therefore requested the Commission to present an assessment of the comparability and adequacy of greenhouse gas emission reductions by 2020, as well as an impact assessment. The results should be made public in June 2010. Up to now, Member States have concentrated on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020. A number of countries, including France, have refused to commit to further cuts as long as EU trading partners such as China and the USA do not take similar steps.
