Forthcoming appointment of Commission scientific advisor

The President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso has decided to appoint a chief scientific advisor to assist the incoming European Commission with decisions on matters such GMOs authorisation and climate change. “We need a fundamental review of the way the European institutions access and use scientific advice,” said President Barroso on 15 September, announcing his intention to institute the function of chief scientific advisor. The new position, which will be created after the swearing-in of the new European Commission, is part of a reorganisation of the directorates responsible for science, research and innovation.
