Caribbean/EU EPA: treatment of fisheries

A document produced by the CRNM (Carribean Regional Negotiating Machinery) in February 2008 highlights how the fisheries sector is treated in the Cariforum-EU EPA. The EPA Chapter on Agriculture and Fisheries acknowledges the social and economic importance of the fisheries sector and the need to maximize the benefits of its sustainable exploitation in relation to factors such as food security, employment, poverty alleviation, foreign exchange earnings and social stability of fishing communities. Concrete measures are proposed to reach those objectives: an information exchange and consultation process that will focus on production, consumption and marketing; technology development; investment promotion; and policy-related issues. Specific projects will be supported by EU funding to address areas such as processing, marketing, improving compliance with technical and quality standards, investment promotion, and building regional institutional capacity for sustainable management and trade in fisheries products.
