Africa trade discussed at the 4th meeting of the Task Force Rural Africa in Brussels

CTA presented at the Task force rural Africa fourth meeting held on 11th October in Brussels the joint IFPRI and CTA Africa Agriculture Trade Monitor (AATM). Research, public and private sector representatives discussed trade, value chains, regional market integration as well as sanitary and phytosanitary standards. Regional markets in Africa are recognised as having a great potential based on their growth in the latest 15 years although below other world regions intra regional trade. Recommendations include efforts to increase agricultural productivity; to accelerate investments in trading infrastructure, road, ports and airports; to harmonize standards and procedures regulating regional trade and to pursue implementation of CFTA. The private sector needs to be better organized to lead some of the changes driving investment and stronger linkages with the organized smallholder farmers need to be in place.
