EC lobbied to adopt sustainable food strategies

While food production, consumption and ironically food waste is high in Europe, for some stakeholders the answer to sustainably transform Europe’s food industry is not more export to third countries but reduced consumption all together. Contrary to EU farmers request for more aid for better export marketing strategies, some lobby groups advocate for reducing the level of EU meat consumption in particular. They highlight that EU citizens account for approximately seven % of the world’s population, they are in fact responsible for 16 % of the world’s meat consumption and animal agriculture accounts for 12.8% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. Thus, high animal consumption in the EU also has high impact on the environment e.g. land degradation, climate change, water shortage and pollution, and loss of biodiversity.
