Cost of doing business in East Africa down by 50%

The cost of doing business in Kenya has reduced by as much as 50% due to the introduction of the Single Customs Territory (SCT) regime introduced by East African countries a year ago. The Kenya Revenue Authority ( KRA) said that the system has contributed to the reduction in time taken to move cargo across the region, down from 18 to only 3 days. KRA Chief Manager Customs Service Department, Ebby Khaghuli said it has taken political goodwill to achieve the high performance in cargo delivery in the East African Community (EAC). She added that the new system was achieved through great sacrifice by the states because no consultants or donors were involved in the process, and that human and financial resources were facilitated by each customs administration.
