Does sustainable palm oil excludes small farmers?

Due to oil palm’s higher resistance to pests and diseases, and its more regular harvest, some small-scale farmers in Ghana are dropping cocoa for oil palm. Solidarid is an organization working to get hundreds of Ghanaian small-scale farmers certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), to  boost their yields and profits. Clustering farmers in groups is a key strategy for training and investment, and negotiating a better price for their crops. Currently, bad seed quality and poor management hinders the supply chain. But small-scale farmers are still estimated to produce 35-40% of palm oil globally, for products from cereals to cosmetics, and oil.
