Green economy: challenges and opportunities for the African continent

While the world is in a state of upheaval, with emerging countries increasingly adding to environmental and climate damage (according to the Global Carbon Project, China was responsible for 27% of CO2 emissions in 2013), the paths taken by developing countries, in particular those in Africa, will be decisive for the future of the planet. Whether it relates to energy, climate or the environment, Africa must commit itself to a long-term transformation and use the wealth that it carries within itself to convert limitations into opportunities. It is important to conclude this article pointing out that the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC) is very advanced in the Green Economy and that numerous players and networks are already mobilized and organized. To this end, a programme will be introduced to boost capacities and steer the green economy for French-speaking African developing countries (PEVA – Programme Economie Verte Afrique) led by the Institut de la Francophonie pour le Développement Durable (IFDD), the Université Senghor, the Centre International des Technologies de l’Environnement de Tunis (CITET) and the Observatoire du Sahara et du Sahel (OSS).
