Côte d'Ivoire: the world’s leading processor of cocoa?

With 520,000 tonnes of cocoa processed this year, Côte d'Ivoire ranks just behind the world’s largest processor, the Netherlands. The International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) expects the West-African country to top the rankings next year. The world’s largest producer of cocoa – 1,741,000 tonnes during the 2013–2014 season – Côte d'Ivoire also wants to become the world’s largest processor of “brown gold” (grinding and manufacture of cocoa butter). According to the latest statistics published by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), the West-African country is well on its way to meeting this challenge.During the 2013–2014 season, around 520,000 tonnes of cocoa were processed in Côte d'Ivoire, i.e. 10% up on the previous season, according to industry estimates. This performance makes it the world’s second largest processor, behind the Netherlands (530,000 tonnes). In relative terms, this represents around 30% of the country’s cocoa production. This result is in line with that recorded in 2012–2013, but is nevertheless remarkable given the strong increase in production recorded this year.
