PNG - Uganda: GMO bananas

A banana which looks just like any other banana at first sight, but once it has been peeled, reveals an orange flesh. This is because this banana, as Le Temps explains, was created by Australian academics. A gene taken from a banana from Papua New Guinea was transferred to the genome of bananas cultivated in the Ugandan high plains and the fruit obtained contains up to 20 times more pro-vitamin A than natural plantain bananas. Clinical trials will be carried out before the end of the year in the United States in order to check whether these pro-vitamins are in fact transformed into vitamin A in the human body.
