Liberia: UNDP Sign Pact With EU On Decentralization

The Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Liberia Attilio Pacifici has described decentralization as an opportunity given to government to build trust between it and its people. Speaking on Monday, at the signing ceremony of a US$5.5m (euro 4.5) decentralization contribution agreement with the Government of Liberia (GoL) in collaboration with UNDP, Mr. Pacifici stressed that promoting participatory local governance helps the citizens understand what they have to do, to be more responsible and accountable.

The Decentralization Agreement which is central to governance reforms, peace building and reconciliation, as well as poverty reduction programs, is in line with Liberia's National Policy on Decentralization and Local Governance and the Liberia Decentralization Implementation Plan (LDIP).

The contribution from the European Union is part of the USD$27 million five-year Liberia Decentralization Support Programme (LDSP) funded by the Government of Liberia, European Union (EU), UNDP, and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

Signing on behalf of the EU, Mr. Pacifici noted that support to the Liberia Decentralization Support Programme is geared toward contributing to the development of Liberia so that all Liberians, independent of where they live, will have access to services, benefit from inclusive economic growth and participate in political life. "This is hope for the future which promotes access to Justice, security and basic social services" intimated the EU Ambassador.
