Malawi: 35,5 million dollars for access to water

The African Development Bank (ADB) announced that Malawi was granted funding of a total of 35.5 million dollars to finance a water supply and sanitation project. This represents a loan for 23 million dollars from the African Development Fund, a loan of 7.7 million dollars from the Nigeria Trust Fund and 4.8 million dollar grant funded by the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative. These funds are intended to secure water supply and sanitation in five districts. Support from ADB falls under the national programme for water resources implemented by the government with the support of several development partners, including the World Bank, UNICEF, the European Investment Bank, the European Union and the Australian government. The BAD Resident Representative in Malawi, Andrew Mwaba, said the project was expected to improve access to water for more than half a million people in the five centres of Rumphi (North of the country), Nkhotakota and Ntcheu (Centre) as well as Mangochi and Phalombe (South): “These actions will broaden inclusive access to better sanitation to a population of nearly 600.000 people, including school children.”
