Haiti: Important partnership between the town of Marigot and the EU

The town of Marigot (South- West department) in partnership with the  Institute for Research and Support to Local Development (IRADEL - l’Institut de Recherche et d’Appui au Développement Local) and the European Union delegation in Haiti, launched the “Support for local development, for the capacity building of local authorities to improve access of basic essential services to the people of the Marigot community” project, an initiative funded by the European Union (EU) amounting to 485,000 Euros. Based on the municipality Development plan, this initiative will actually improve local authorities’ capacity to make them more efficient in the delivery of public services to the population, to establish dialogue between the different community stakeholders with the aim to encourage the participatory management of the development, improve the level of public services to the population and its access through the implementation of 5 micro-projects: rehabilitation of rural roads, construction of a Vocational Training Centre, watershed protection, support for breeding activities and the sale of agricultural products. This initiative, which will improve the access to basic services such as sanitation, urban safety and education for over 60,000 residents in Marigot, comes at the right time to strengthen measures previously implemented in the city for local development. This project, which will run for a period of 24 months, led by the city of Marigot, part of the 11th European Development Fund,  is one of the priority areas of cooperation of the European Union in Haiti and is part of the support to strengthen the local governance and decentralization.
